Wes Watkins has been a serious photographer for a little over eight years now, and has been doing it professionally for around two. Though primarily known as a travel photographer, having photographed in over 30 countries, his work while in the United States is focused on nature, landscape and wildlife. Wes has taught classes on Travel photography at North Arkansas College, and has taught lessons in workshops held in several states. His work has been presented in slideshows shown throughout Arkansas and in exhibitions around the state. His work has graced several coffee table books, calendars and magazines.
Wes graduated with a BS in Biology from Duke University in 2002, after which he moved from his native Arkansas to Lake Tahoe, California. After a year of photographing in the Sierras, he flew to Australia and spent the next 17 months traveling and photographing around the world. Upon his return, he became an understudy of Glenn's, switching to digital and spending a great deal of time in the outdoors.
While outdoor nature photography differs from international travel photography, Wes strives for artistic consistency in how he presents his subjects. Preferring to study subjects from the ground up, a great deal of his work is done with macro lens or in hyperfocus, tending to impart an intimacy that attempts to draw viewers into an image. Wes prefers to find his images in the backcountry, sometimes hiking for days into the wilderness on a quest for the perfect shot.
Wes is a registered EMT and works part time in a Neuropsychology Lab in Little Rock, AR. In his downtime, he designs websites for other artists but still travels when he gets the chance, his most recent trip being to Guatemala and Belize in Central America.
Wes has several photography projects in the works, including working with Hunger Free Arkansas to document the homeless in Little Rock. He is also working with his father on a book tentatively titled "Handmade Homes of the Arkansas Ozarks".
